Help Harry!

For our second STEM project, students had to engineer and create a safe structure.

As they entered my room and asked what we would be doing that day, I simply told them we were going to help Harry. It took a moment for them to realize they had no idea who Harry was and began to ask. I told them he was in the room with us. Of course there were comments like, "is it a ghost?!" Eventually, I pointed out the Harry's perched on top of my white board.

I presented them with the task of making a newer, safer perch for Harry to sit and watch us during class. They could only use the following items: pipe cleaner, cupcake liner, about 12 inches of tape, a piece of aluminum foil, and an index card.

They set to work immediately. Of course as with all our science projects, they had to write down their hypothesis and the steps of their plan. They had 5 minutes to plan, and then 15 minutes to build. Once they were done building, we tested our perches. If it did not work, they wrote down what went wrong and tried something different.

Each pair took a different approach. They all came up with interesting ideas and they all worked!

**UPDATE: 2 of our perches are still standing strong! We are still waiting for my music classes to notice them!
